The One Thing Big Brands Cannot Fake (And You Already Have)
Why your customers keep coming back—and how to lean into your unfair advantage

Last week, I watched a woman walk into a chain store, pick up a sweater, check the price tag, and immediately pull out her phone.
She was not checking reviews.
She was comparing prices on Amazon.
That same afternoon, I saw something completely different at a small boutique downtown. A customer walked in, and the owner greeted her by name. Asked about her daughter first day of school. Remembered she was looking for something for an upcoming anniversary dinner.
The customer did not check her phone once.
Here is what big brands will never understand: You cannot automate genuine care. You cannot scale authentic connection. And you sure as heck cannot train a corporate employee to remember someone life story when they are juggling 47 other tasks and a script that says Would you like to sign up for our rewards program?
Big brands have budgets. They have algorithms. They have warehouses full of inventory and marketing teams with six-figure salaries.
But you have something they cannot buy: You actually give a damn.
When a customer shops at your store, they are not just buying a product. They are buying the experience of being seen. Being remembered. Being treated like a human instead of a transaction.
The Small Shop Advantage is simple:
You can know your regulars by name. You can text them when that perfect piece comes in. You can remember that they hate the color orange or that they are allergic to wool or that they are shopping for their mother 70th birthday.
Big brands have data. You have relationships.
And relationships beat data every single time.
So here is your homework this week: Pick three customers who have been in your shop recently. Not your biggest spenders—your most connected ones. The ones who light up when they see you. The ones who tell you about their lives.
Send them a quick message. Not a sales pitch. Just a Hey, I was thinking about you. How did that thing go?
Watch what happens.
Because while the big brands are busy optimizing their conversion funnels, you will be building something they can never replicate: A business where people actually want to show up.
That is your edge. Use it.
